the beginning
The Swedish tradition of Fika was introduced to Tyler as he was working a barista shift on the Spit. A regular customer came in to the shop, with a big smile and a couple of friends. “We’re having a fika right now!” they said, and explained how it is a cultural institution, like a siesta in Spain, but you take a break, have a coffee and a small bite to eat, and spend time with friends.
In late 2019, Tyler was approached to buy the coffee booth at the Homer Farmer’s Market. From there, it was an easy choice to choose a brand name, and Fika was born! When the summer of 2020 rolled around and the market began, the world was in a new place - worried, reflective, and socially-distanced. Still, we encouraged our customers, family, and friends to stay connected and spread the good word of fika into our community.
That year we were focusing only on French Press, Pourovers, and Loose-Leaf Teas, getting our coffee from Ano Kissaten Roasters in Homer.
